I wanted to be sure to keep you in the loop as some recent, exciting changes have taken place for Vanessa's Photography which will affect your patronage - in a good way! I've joined forces with my favorite award-winning colleague, Pam Long, at her studio in Howard County - Pam Long Photography (www.PamLongPhotography.com) of Ellicott City, where I will be the lead photographer for high school seniors. Carrying on my passion of creating beautiful portraits, I will continue photographing fun, style-based images for high school seniors on the Pam Long Photography team of award-winning photographers. I will also be available on a limited basis for baby and family portraits.

What does this mean to you? For starters, we're busting out the archives and blowing out our high-resolution digital negative "inventory" of your past sessions with Vanessa's Photography with our final sale. Also, we'll be making our studio sample wall displays and albums available for sale at a greatly reduced cost. This sale will only be available until the end of August at which point all unpurchased imagery will be deleted forever. High-resolution digital files will be available at drastically reduced prices. I can personally and professionally attest to how happy you'll be at Pam Long Photography. Have you heard? Vanessa's Photography is having a one-day sale for Basic Senior Sessions this Saturday! Each Basic Senior Session slot purchased allows 15 minutes of session time at our Elkridge studio to photograph one outfit. Keep it simple with one outfit or go all out with as many as you'd like! Expect 4-6 images to choose from for each outfit photographed. Print orders are placed immediately after your session.

The first step is to let the studio know you're interested so you can get the password to the catalog. We're able to keep the sessions more affordable by minimizing overhead without scrimping on quality! Sessions are booked and correspondence is handled on-line. The photoshoots are run by our Associate Photographer, Adriane with a Kid-Wrangler provided during our "Simple Sets" sessions to ensure ordering your prints right after your session is a hassle-free process. Your order is shipped directly to you within two weeks (often sooner) so it's a one-stop shop!

I just wanted to say a big congratulations and thank you to my graduating Class of 2010 Seniors! It was great working with so many of you to create your senior portraits this past year. I want to give a special shout-out "Thanks" to Annie, Patrick, Tracy and Aliana who were my Spokesmodels representing Vanessa's Photography for their peers.

I also want to give an uber SHOUT of gratitude to Annie who worked pro bono for our studio as part of Centennial High's GT Internship program. From messy newborn sessions, painting new sets, and blogging to standing in the river holding speed lights, Annie fit our studio like a glove and her pro bono-ness will be missed.

The day immediately following Erica and Chris's intimate Punta Cana wedding, we all woke up early to photograph them in the beatiful 6am light in her 2nd dress. My husband accompanied me on this particular shoot and without his help, I couldn't have acheived the stupendous (yet subtle) accent lighting on the left in the first two images featured here. (Thank you, Babe!)

If Erica looks familiar, that's because she's the owner of Silver Immersion and has been my stylist for about 3 years now. She dedicates so many of her weekends to helping brides look their best on their big day; I'm so grateful to have been a part of her bridal experience before, during, and after her big day!

Between shooting a wedding in the Dominican Republic (of the lovely couple to your left) and teaching a workshop, the studio will be closed from April 30th through May 10th. I apologize for the inconvenience. (There are behind-the-scenes gnomes here at the studio whom I call "Angela" and "Adriane.")

The Oaks in St. Michaels provided a stunning setting for the wedding of Lisa and Denis. It was no surprise that Lisa, the associate publisher for The Perfect Wedding Guide had her very own perfect wedding. Lisa’s best friend Stephanie Bradshaw, or as she liked to call her “Chica,” styled the wedding with simplicity and elegance. As a teenage daughter myself, I loved seeing Denis’s daughter, Savannah, fill the roll of his “best man” for her dad. This one picture on the bikes was not only a wonderful shot, but also a blast to capture.

A Quick Hello & Holiday Schedule

I can't believe how quickly the year has gone by already! Did someone mention that it's Thankgiving tomorrow?! Wowsers! The studio has seen tremendous growth and we are always striving to dream up new and exciting sets and promotions. To allow for me to keep my creative and business edge (and still have the semblance of a family life), I've brought on more staff here at the studio. Many of you have already gotten a chance to speak with Sancha, our Client Service Specialist, who will be doing the majority of client correspondence on my behalf. Also, Adriane, the Queen of Personality, is our Art Consultant - helping you with your portrait selection and purchase during your Order Appointment. The ever-faithful Angela is still here but, with Rhais (the studio baby) getting bigger, she's transitioned into more of a behind-the-scenes Production Manager, handling the pre- and post- editing processes. We'll also get to see more of Intern Annie helping out during sessions now that her soccer season is officially over. She's my wing-woman in the camera room!

So, last month, I attempted to take a "Staycation" to unwind a bit and it was a serious failure. I worked (albeit behind the scenes) 6 of the 7 days! =( Well, I'm happy to say that my hard work has paid off and my husband and I will be taking a real, much-needed vacation sooner than we thought. (Yay!) Below you'll find how our scheduling is working out for the next couple of months.

Please note that during the dates where there are No Sessions, the studio will still be running without Vanessa. Orders will still be processed and sessions may still be scheduled for other dates. Do note that the studio may be running on modified hours - perhaps 3 out of the 5 business days...

A little less than a year ago, Ellie and Drew had some photos done with our studio. Well, their family is about to double as Ellie is marrying Steve and getting a step-son to boot! Annie-Roo! That's what Angela affectionately calls the studio's high school intern, Annie. You may remember some of the images from Annie's studio session back in February. Well this time, her freckles have seen the sun and are out in full force! We're not done yet, either! We're taking advantage of Annie's allegiance to the studio to try some new things... Kelly + Jeremy {Married}

Here they are again - just married now instead of engaged... Kelly and Jeremy are a gorgeous couple with fabulous friends and family who helped them celebrate their vows to each other!

So, just outside of the reception, for the first time ever in Vanessa's Photography history, we set up what we're going to call the "More Better Booth"! The name of our fun booth was a collaboration between Jeremy and me during Kelly and Jeremy's initial wedding consultation. Since they trusted us to pull this off, we're keeping the name! He was just 5 lbs but you'd never know how small he was when you saw how strong his neck muscles were! He was lifting his head and looking all around. Not just during a bobbly-head moment either! Okay, so I'm VERY behind in blogging these days. As of right now, I have 13 other sessions to blog plus I'm have a bunch on the books in the next couple of weeks. You know, we used to do video slideshows too but for some reason, I'm having a hard time getting the code to work on Blogger. So, we're back to just a couple artist fav's from each session.

Local Photographer Joins International Non-Profit Council

Elkridge, MD —Professional photographer Vanessa Ard of Elkridge, MD was elected to join the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Council for 2009 – 2012. A non-profit, international association with 22,000 members, PPA is ultimately governed by its members through such council representatives.

"I'm thrilled to share the views of other PPA members in Maryland so that we can be heard," Vanessa remarked.

PPA Councilors are professional photographers who volunteer their time and service to guide and act as the voice for their state’s PPA members. Duties include discussing and voting on changes to the Bylaws and Adopted Procedures and the leadership of the association (via the election of the board of directors and the Nominating Committee). They also play a crucial role in sharing the PPA message to existing, new and prospective PPA members.

Conor and Angela's baby has finally arrived! Welcome, Rhais! Angela knows first-hand how important it is to get your newborn into our studio as soon as possible. For that, she brought in Rhais on her 3rd day of life! Already being a big baby (8lbs 14oz), I'm glad she came in when she did!

Besides being our wonderful studio manager, some of you may know that Angela and her family are very dear family friends of ours - the kind with whom we go camping and do family vacations! Knowing that, don't be surprised when I tell you that we spent 5 hours on this session!

Erica (my good friend over at Silver Immersion) came by the studio the other day to hang out and practice her handy work with make-up airbrushing. (I'm not sure what the "industry" term might be.) She fancied up Angela and me and then we took some test shots in the studio. The funny part is that Erica actually wasn't wearing any make-up herself (because it was just us) but we had her jump in for a group shot anyway. Ali + Angelos {Married}

These two could rock the cover of a magazine with their style! During a toast, the brothers of the groom spilled the beans that Angelos was voted "Best Dressed" in high school. His good taste doesn't stop at fashion - check out his beautiful bride, Alison!

I had a blast photographing this wedding and found myself dance-shooting* more than usual during the reception.

*"Dance-shooting" is what I do when I'm moving amongst the wedding guests while they're dancing. I kind of dance around a bit as I flow through the crowd looking for a photo-op.

Jamie + Michael {Married}

What a lovely day for a wedding! This intimate (seriously 20-ish family-only guests) wedding took place at the lovely William Paca House & Gardens in Annapolis on the same day as the Naval Academy's graduation. I have happy memories of this day not only for Jamie and Michael's wedding but because I got there so early in anticipation of crazy traffic that I had time to walk downtown to my favorite Annapolis coffee shop for an iced chai latte. I sat outside and basked in the warm morning light taking in the bustling downtown which was gearing up for a busy tourist weekend...
Anyway, back to the wedding, when Jamie and Michael contacted me about their wedding photography coverage, when I heard "small, downtown Annapolis, and family only" I was picturing court-house style nuptials followed by a bride & groom portrait session. When we had our consultation, they explained that they gave up their grand wedding ceremony ideas en lieu of this intimate approach because they found themselves not being themselves as a couple in trying to plan a big event - arguing over petty details and trying to please everyone but each other. The nice thing about their family-only event was the fact that I had photographed their family reunion last year so I was already mostly familiar with their guests! FUN! Congratulations, Jamie and Michael!

The {R} Family - Belated Newborn Session

I *heart* newborn sessions! I consider maternity and newborn portraiture to be a specialty of our studio!
This little guy slipped by the 10-day window in which I usually like to photograph newborns but at 6 weeks old, he was still surprisingly cooperative! We started the session off with some wine for the parents and a bottle of milk for lil' Matty. What an incredible time we enjoyed together! I love looking back at the parents while I'm photographing the baby alone and to see the love and joy in their faces just melts my heart and reminds me of why I love the career I've chosen!

The {T} Family - In-Home Session

The week leading up to this session, the whole {T} family was ill and even during the session, poor little Nicholas had an ear infection. He was fussy until the end when we managed to eek out a bunch of intimate family images on the bed.

For those of you who are familiar with my work, you know I don't do a lot of in-home sessions. We use the studio a lot and when I'm "on-location", it's usually at a park or urban setting. This was a fun challenge for me to work in an unfamiliar environment! I look forward to trying more in-home sessions like this in the future!

Any day now... {Ashley's Maternity Session}

Some of you may know Ashley Riddle, owner of Up Do's for I Do's, having had worked with her or maybe through the wedding industry... I'm lucky enough to know her as a friend too.

Ashley helped me move from my Ellicott City studio to the Elkridge studio last fall. A few days before the move, she found out she was pregnant but she didn't back out of the help. We just didn't let her lift heavy stuff. Fast forward several months. She came in for her maternity portraits in April and now we're expecting to meet her baby girl any day now! (Stay tuned for newborn images in the coming weeks!)

Milyssa + Andrew {Married}

A Mother's Day wedding... Milyssa and Andrew actually met when Milyssa was 10 and hanging out with her dad while he led Boy Scout events. Needless to say, Andrew was a Boy Scout in his troupe. *heart*

Thank You, National Charity Model Search Participants!

As you may know, I recently participated in the first National Charity Model Search. The contest's goal was to discover America's cutest kid and to raise money for charity.

It was a huge success, 2,000 model's images were submitted to the contest, and most importantly, the competition raised $164,775 for the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS) foundation.

The competition was so much fun. We were thrilled to enter our community's cutest kids into the contest. The feedback from clients has been overwhelmingly positive. People were enthusiastic about my philanthropic efforts to partner with NILMDTS. So many folks have experienced the loss of a child or know someone who has. Raising money for NILMDTS was an effort everyone supported.

The 50 finalists have been selected. Photography and modeling industry experts will select the grand prizewinner, which will be announced on May 1st. The finalist gallery is available for viewing - just click here.

This has been such a positive experience that we plan on participating in the National Charity Model Search next year. I hope that just as many of you step up to partner with me in this fun endeavor, and that we raise even more money for NILMDTS in 2010.

The Snuggle Family

Have I mentioned before how much I love my career? I really do! Because I get to deal with kindrid spirits so much of the time and create "modern heirloom portraits" for them! When I met with Andrea and George to discuss their family portrait session, I asked them about their family's personality. They mentioned they like to snuggle a lot and they weren't kidding! What a great family to work with!
This is just a quick teaser. (And, no video this time. I'm lucky to even get a posting in at all.) I'm looking forward to showing them the rest of what we created!

Dear Blog,

I know I've neglected you these past few weeks - I'm so sorry! I have to be honest with you, I have a web-crush on Facebook these days. I never meant it to turn into anything that would take away from our relationship but I realize my infatuation has done just that. But that's not the only reason, I promise!

You see, I've been crazy busy lately. I've taken on several new projects that just consume me. One of them has to do with this other site... I didn't want to tell you so soon because I'm still not sure where that relationship is heading. It all takes time and I wish we had more of it! Anyway, I hope this note finds you well. Miss Dawn {Boudoir Session}

I LOVE surprises! Dawn is a bride-to-be who is full of Bride-Pride! She chose our studio to create a boudoir surprise for her fiance. She actually brought him into the Order appointment last week and didn't tell him where he was going or why. What fun! This is my favorite public-viewable image from her session and she must have liked it too - she ordered a 20x24" wall portrait of this along with our popular session album! It was a blast, Dawn!
Due to privacy concerns, we aren't able to post about all of our sessions (especially boudoir) so I'm extra excited that we can post this!

Karyn {My Step-Daughter}

For those of you who have heard about my step-daughter Karyn but haven't yet met her, here's my newest favorite image of her. What I really like about this high-key image (beyond the lighting and how she looks) is the fact that this was a family effort. Karyn was modeling, Daniele (my husband) was working the wind magic, and I was behind the camera. This only took us maybe 2 minutes and we were done. But every time I look at this image of Karyn, it will remind me of our family time together. (Sappy but true.) I think I'll get this as a 30x40" for our foyer.

Lil' Zach {2nd Birthday}

I've seen Lil' Zach and his family several times over the past year starting with his 1st Birthday photos. Here he is for an encore session celebrating his 2nd Birthday! During the session we discovered that he is utterly amused with beaded curtain tie-backs in the studio. Those were our saving grace!!!

Naomi {National Charity Model Search}

This past weekend we set aside some time for Naomi to have her day in the sun! Naomi's mom, Debbie, is friends with Gloria's mom, Angelina, so when Debbie heard about the model search for this fantastic charity, she made the drive up from southern Maryland. Naomi put up with us outside for a bit but really "warmed up" in the studio!

Maya {Class of 2009}

Let me start by saying that Maya's eyes really are that stunning in real life! The funny thing about her session is that we had originally scheduled it back in December to take place in March (hoping for an early spring). We ended up rescheduling because I "refuse" to shoot in weather below 50 degrees (and it was supposed to be snowing that morning followed by 40 degrees). So, we show up at 8am this past weekend and it's 25 degrees! Yikes! We all sucked it up and Maya totally pulled it off!

Lucca {Superman Newborn}

At just 10 days old, this little guy was super strong! He could move his head all around and was practically flexing his biceps! Did I mention? Lucca set the record for the least amount of pee-pee (and no poop) during a newborn session!

Who could forget cute lil' Drew? This amazing two year old can count in French and Spanish and (this is my favorite part) he can evoke different emotions on demand.
